KROS

From field to package: how KROS makes oat flakes, groats and split peas

KROS was founded in January 1994 and has worked in grain processing from day one. Since 2001 we have been based in Iłownica, in the Pomeranian region of northern Poland, where we run our own silos, warehouses and processing lines. This is where Polish grain becomes oat flakes, groats and split peas.

Quality starts at grain intake

We buy barley, oats, wheat, rye and peas directly from farmers. Quality control starts the moment grain arrives: our laboratory makes sure every batch meets our standards. We also test how new grain varieties behave in processing: together with the seed company IGP Polska we checked whether the barley varieties Aleksandra and Finezja are suitable for barley groats.

Oat flakes: four floors of technology

Our oat flake line is spread over four floors of the plant and runs 24 hours a day. It is an investment of more than PLN 20 million. Before an oat grain becomes a flake, it goes through:

  1. multiple cleaning,
  2. optical sorting (Sortex),
  3. hulling,
  4. flaking,
  5. drying,
  6. roasting,
  7. cooling.

Quality is checked at every stage. Our range includes regular, rolled and instant oat flakes, as well as hulled and crushed oats for further processing. See the range in Cereals.

Barley groats and pearl barley

For barley groats we clean and hull Polish barley, cut it in the mill to the required fraction – fine, medium or coarse – and pack it automatically, for example into 5 kg bags for foodservice. Pearl barley is made from barley we buy ourselves: from grain intake through processing to the finished product, every step takes place in our plant. We do not add any improvers. See Barley Groats.

Split peas

We buy peas from farmers, hull them and split them into halves in our own plant. The result is yellow split peas for home cooking, catering and the food industry. See Legumes.

Packing

Our packing lines fill our products into cartons of four 100 g cooking bags, 400 g and 500 g sachets and 5 kg catering bags. For industrial customers we also prepare 20–25 kg sacks and big bags of approx. 800 kg. Our products contain no artificial colours, preservatives or flavours.

What this means for buyers

  • One supplier from grain to finished product – purchasing, processing and packing under one roof.
  • Known origin – cereals from Polish farms, checked from the moment they arrive.
  • Consistent quality from batch to batch.
  • Flexibility – a choice of formats and production under your own brand.
